| Povljana - island of Pag |
Povljana is situated on the southern part of the island. It has around 800 inhabitants. It is a traditionally agricultural area that has been provided food for almost the whole island for centuries. A big turn occurred in the middle of the 20th century when tourism began to develop in Povljana. The village extended, changed its appearance and turned from a rural centre to today's tourist centre of major importance. Povljana offers beautiful beaches, clear sea, and an especially important bay of the old Povljana, rich with clams. The inhabitants of Povljana are known as being very kind and hospitable. Povljana is the first village on the island where winter tourism started to develop. The biggest building in Povljana was the hunting lodge where the hunters from all over the Europe gathered, invited by the noblemen of Pag. The first document describing the arrival of a greater number of tourists to Povljana dates from 1954. Povljana is also a rich archaeological territory, with several very valuable cultural monuments.
